About the croft

Our 13 acre croft is home to Rosie, the 6 year old sow we share with two of our neighbours, 12 hens and 6 ducks, most of them drakes!

In our bùth beag we sell the eggs from our hens, somtimes our own pork, and a wee bit of produce from our garden and polytunnel.

We garden without chemicals, feeding the soil with manure from our hens and our neighbour’s ponies, as well as collecting seaweed from the nearby shore.

Our next big project is to deer-fence our whole croft in summer 2025 and to plant 8,000 trees over the following winter. These will provide shelter for our animals, and for expanding our fruit and vegetable production, as well as creating new habitats for pollinators, birds and other wildlife.

Rosie

As the runt of the litter, Rosie was bottle-fed for the first couple of months of her life. We kept her and she has grown into a fine sow and an excellent mother. She has so far had three large litters and we are hopeful that she can produce more piglets this year.

When we have piglets on the croft we always keep some of the weaners to grow on to produce delicious, free-range pork for ourselves to eat and to sell locally. The other weaners we sell on to other pork producers in Mull.

Coille Challtuinn

Our croft name is Coille Challtuinn which means hazel woodland.

We are lucky enough to have small areas of native hazel woodland.

This habitat is unique to the West Coast of Scotland and home to glove fungus, primroses and bluebells.
